HEALTHCARE REFORM OPPONENTS TELL
OBEY
THEY WANT TO REPEAL MEDICARE
TOO
Congressman Rejects Calls to Abolish
Medicare, Maintain
Status-Quo
WASHINGTON, D.C. – In
the clearest display yet of how far out of the
mainstream the vocal minority opposing
healthcare reform has become, a number of local
citizens came to Seventh District Congressman
Dave Obey’s (D-WI) office in Wausau today to
protest the healthcare reform plan, and
announced that not only do they want to prevent
healthcare reform, they want to see Medicare
repealed too.
The protesters were
responding to calls by national Republican
leaders urging those who are opposed to
healthcare reform to contact their local
representatives to express their
opposition. Obey, who is in Washington
because Congress is in session this week,
talked to the protesters by phone to hear their
views on healthcare reform. Each protester
indicated to the Congressman that they are very
much opposed to the healthcare plan before
Congress now and that they would like to see
Medicare, the healthcare safety net for
America’s seniors,
abolished.
Noting that “the great
thing about America is that it’s a free country
and everyone is entitled to their own views,”
Obey told the protesters “make no mistake about
it, the vast majority of people in the 7th
District do not favor repealing Medicare and
they do not favor the status-quo when it comes
to healthcare.”
Obey added that
his constituents know where he stands on
healthcare reform and Medicare. “Since I first
ran for Congress, I have made it quite clear
that I agree with those who want healthcare
reform. I have fought against the healthcare
status-quo for my entire career, and I intend
to stick with my promise to vote for major
reform when the bill comes before the House
this weekend. And when it comes to
Medicare, not only do we have to protect it, we
have to strengthen it to make sure that it
continues to be there for all
Americans.”
