Special Pre-Election Newsletter

Democratic Party of Chippewa County
Special Election Newsletter

Our Mission Statement: We are dedicated to promoting the interests of the Democratic Party in Chippewa County. To this end, we will hold regular meetings, recruit members, recruit candidates, and support campaigns.

CAMPAIGNS

Over the past five months the Chippewa County Democratic Party Executive Committee has been dealing mostly with issues related to the Presidential campaign, Assembly campaigns, and Local races. One race in particular, in the 67th District, has been more complicated than usual, and that’s why it’s the main focus of this special newsletter. However, other news about the importance of each race, about volunteering, and how each hour between now and November 4th is critically important is also included.

67th ASSEMBLY

Most of you are aware that our efforts to find someone willing to take on the incumbent Jeff Wood were not successful, and even after he left the Republican Party, no one would accept the challenge, as easy as it may have been at that time. Because we have no Democrat running in the 67th Assembly District, it is important for us to take a close look at Jeff Wood’s candidacy, as an Independent. Jeff spoke with some members of the party at an October 16th meeting and candidly explained his positions. While there are still some areas we probably don’t agree with him, there are also many where we do. While we as the Democratic Party of Chippewa County are not formally endorsing a candidate in this race, we want voters to be aware that the two candidates running in this district are far different.

Jeff Wood’s decision to run as an Independent included a stinging rebuke of his former colleagues in a Chippewa Herald editorial. (LINK: http://www.wispolitics.com/index.Iml?Article=130563)
As many predicted, the GOP did not take Wood’s exit gently. They are fielding a candidate who will march in lockstep with those same Republican leaders who would gut education funding, block health care reform, govern through extremist and divisive social issues, and even deny women prescribed medications at the pharmacy counter. That candidate is an ultra conservative one issue Republican who vows to follow the party line.

One of our county party members, State Senator Pat Kreitlow, would like to elaborate:

Hello Everyone!

If you remember how much heart and soul we poured into Roberta Rasmus’ race two years ago, you also remember the agony of coming up short on Election Night. It wasn’t for lack of trying on the Democratic side. The incumbent, Rep. Jeff Wood, was simply better recognized and able to make the most of his very public willingness to buck his party leadership when circumstances required. That reputation certainly played a role in our difficulties in finding a Democratic candidate in 2008.

But public disenchantment with the Republican agenda led to early successes in 2006 and has continued to grow ever since. Earlier this year, Republican Assembly members began retiring in droves. Rep. Terry Musser, you’ll recall, delivered some harsh words for the Assembly GOP leadership on his way out. (LINK: http://www.lacrossetribune.com/articles/2008/05/22/news/z04musser.txt) And Jeff Wood was going to do the same thing before he changed his mind and decided to stand for reelection as an Independent.

I won’t tell you Jeff has been reborn as party-line Democrat. But Jeff’s reluctance to toe the line for either party makes him a credible alternative to a Republican foot soldier whose allegiance to the far right wing of his party would serve our district poorly.

He was the only GOP vote against their version of a state budget, and Wood later confirmed his leaders’ closed-door assertions that their version was never a serious document but was instead written for political positioning in the 2008 election.

He has vocally expressed his disgust with the Iraq War, John McCain’s embrace of “borrow and spend” recklessness, the Bush suspension of basic human rights regarding torture, habeas corpus and wiretapping on citizens.

And he has not taken his election for granted for one moment. He has raised the funds necessary for mail and advertising to make his appeal to independents, Republicans and Democrats who understand the value of experience, work ethic and a willingness to work on both sides of the aisle for good legislation.

All of us in the Chippewa County Democratic party have made it clear that any encouragement we provide for Jeff Wood in 2008 sets no precedent for 2010. He is free to seek the party’s support in a primary against other candidates, and we are certain other people (Democrats and Republicans) will be seeking the seat as well.

But for this particular election, when the choice is another right wing Republican or an Independent with a record of helping me craft bipartisan legislation to benefit our area, I hope my fellow Democrats will vote down-ballot, casting votes not just in the Presidential and Congressional races, but for District Attorney and State Assembly, as well.

Warmest Regards,
Pat Kreitlow
State Senator, 23rd District

Note: The 67th District includes all of Chippewa Falls and all of Chippewa County EXCEPT for Lake Hallie and the Towns of Wheaton, Hallie and Lafayette which are in the 68th District. The Towns of Sigel, Edson and Delmar plus Boyd and Stanley are in the 69th District where Tim Swiggum is challenging Scott Suder.

68th ASSEMBLY

The 68th Assembly race is clearly the “spotlight” race in our area which also includes northern Eau Claire and Eau Claire County. Republican incumbent Terry Moulton and his friends have launched a very well-financed smear campaign against Democratic challenger Kristen Dexter whose energy and activities were so essential to Senator Kreitlow’s victory over Dave Zien. Now it’s Kristen who needs our energy and activity to help her unseat someone who seems meek on the outside but never fails Republicans as a rubber stamp and, as seen lately, a true politician willing to stoop to personal attacks and false claims in a desperate move to stay in power.

Kristen has been a tireless advocate for the need to have a representative more willing to stand up to insurance companies and anti-education budget slashers. But to ensure a victory on November 4th, we need people willing to take an hour or two to canvass neighborhoods and/or make phone calls reminding people about the importance of voting in this Assembly race, too.

If you can help, call Kristen’s office at 855-1035, just go down to the Eau Claire Democratic Resource Center, or stop in at our office to pick up walk/call lists.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S RACE

The Chippewa County District Attorney race is also heating up and Holly Wood Webster is going door to door garnering support and making her case. Notice the signs suddenly popping up for her candidacy all around Chippewa County. She, too, needs help calling folks, doing literature drops, and going door to door. John Theisen said he was going to crush her in this election. No way! Let’s do all we can to support a fellow Democrat - Volunteer to help. Simply call the office for more information about what can be done.

CHIPPEWA FALLS VOLUNTEERS

We need all the volunteers we can get in these last few days right her in Chippewa Falls for the Obama campaign, the Kristen Dexter Campaign, and the Holly Wood Webster campaign. There is still much work to be done and we can not simply sit back and think our candidates have it all sealed up. Please take some time in your busy lives to volunteer to canvass or make phone calls to some of the many people we still have to reach before November 4. You can call the Chippewa County Democratic office at 738-1888 to let us know when you can volunteer.

We are also looking for people who would be willing to bring food to the office during our GOTV (GET OUT THE VOTE) days when volunteers will be phoning and canvassing all day and evening leading up to the election.

GOTV will begin Saturday, November 1 and run through the evening of Election Day, November 4. There will be many hard working volunteers (hopefully you will be one of them!) who will need to have nourishment during these days. If you can help provide food or other activities related to the care and feeding of dedicated volunteers, please let us know and we’ll find just the right job for you.

CELEBRATE ELECTION NIGHT WITH US

Finally, when the work is done… and not a moment before the last voters are shuttled to the polls at 8:00 pm… it will be time to celebrate what we hope will be victories at home and in Washington, DC. Please join us for a joint victory party with the Eau Claire County Democrats.

Just FYI:

The New York Times | The Crisis Agenda     http://www.truthout.org/100708J
The New York Times, Editorial: "As stocks cratered on Monday and lending and borrowing remained frozen, the Bush administration rushed to implement the $700 billion bailout enacted on Friday. The Treasury Department said that it would soon post help-wanted ads on its Web site for asset managers to run the program and that because of the urgency, the hiring may be 'through other than full and open competition.' Is it any wonder that the markets lack confidence? One business day after the bailout was enacted, and it already had a tilting-at-windmills quality."

Obama Up in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Minnesota     http://www.truthout.org/100708L
Christopher Stern, Bloomberg: "Democrat Barack Obama leads Republican presidential nominee John McCain in battleground states of Ohio, Pennsylvania and Minnesota, according to new polls. Obama, an Illinois senator, leads 49 percent to 42 percent among Ohio voters, according to a Columbus Dispatch poll of 2,2 62 likely voters released yesterday."

UN Agrees Afghan War Cannot Be Won Militarily     http://www.truthout.org/100708N
Jonathon Burch, Reuters: "The war in Afghanistan cannot be won militarily and success is only possible through political means including dialogue among all relevant parties, the United Nation's top official in the country said on Monday. His comments come after Britain's military commander in Afghanistan said the war could not be won and that the goal was to reduce the insurgency to a level where it was no longer a strategic threat and could be dealt with by the Afghan army. Brigadier Mark Carleton-Smith said if the Taliban were willing to talk, that might be 'precisely the sort of progress' needed to end the insurgency."

******Will political smears influence the result of the 2008 election?
Smear campaigns are nothing new in U.S. politics, but during the 2008 presidential race, the Internet has assumed a bigger role in transmitting misinformation and negative claims about candidates. The lightning speed at which these rumors spread and the lack of scrutiny they receive threaten to seriously undermine public discourse. The good news is that this campaign season the public has access to a slew of fact-checking websites, including www.FactCheck.org, www.PolitiFact.com and www.Snopes.com that are squelching Internet rumors and separating fact from fiction.  Click on the link or type it in your search engine!

SECOND Special Pre-Election Newsletter

Democratic Party of Chippewa County
Special Election Newsletter 2

Our Mission Statement:  We are dedicated to promoting the interests of the
Democratic Party in Chippewa County.  To this end, we will hold regular
meetings, recruit members, recruit candidates, and support campaigns.

GOTV (Get Out the Vote) CAMPAIGN

GOTV begins Saturday, November 1. It is simply an all out effort by
volunteers to make sure everyone supporting our candidates get to the polls
to vote. We will be canvassing and phone calling throughout the period to
ensure that outcome. We still need volunteers to help. You can call the
Chippewa County Democratic Office at 738-1888 to sign up for duties and
times. I know the campaign has been long, many of us are tired, but we
cannot stop just yet. Unless our supporters get to the polls to vote all we
have worked for is for naught. Please give us just a couple hours of your
time to ensure Chippewa County does it’s part in electing progressive
candidates. It’s really, really critical we have your help. The office will
be open for volunteer work from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday through
Tuesday. Please volunteer a couple hours of your time.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S RACE

The Chippewa County District Attorney race is also heating up and Holly
Wood Webster is going door to door garnering support and making her case.
Notice the signs suddenly popping up for her candidacy all around Chippewa
County. She, too, needs help calling folks, doing lit literature drops,
going door to door. Jon Theisen said he was going to crush her in this
election. No way! Let’s do all we can to support a fellow Democrat -
Volunteer to help. Simply call the office for more information about what
can be done.

67th ASSEMBLY RACE

The 67th Assembly Race is between Independent Jeff Wood and Republican Don
Moga.
As indicated in our last newsletter the Democratic Party of Chippewa County
is not endorsing Independent Jeff Wood, but we do recognize the political
reality of what effect our vote for him would have in opposition to the
single issue, party line puppet, Republican candidate. When Jeff Wood met
with party members on October 16th, he pointed out the areas we were likely
in agreement. Jeff is a supporter of Barack Obama, and has been for quite
some time. He opposes the Patriot Act and any such provisions that limit
individual rights and freedom of speech. He also opposes Bush’s suspension
of basic human rights regarding torture, habeas corpus and wiretapping of
citizens. He has supported women’s issues in the past and pushed the
Compassionate Care Act through the Assembly last spring. We won’t always be
in agreement with Jeff Wood, because he remains and Independent, but  a
vote for Jeff Wood would help ensure the Assembly Democrats take control of
the Assembly. That is critical to a successful legislative session. As hard
as it may be for some of us diehard Democrats to think about supporting,
Jeff Wood , he deserves our thoughtful consideration.

68th ASSEMBLY RACE

The 68th Assembly race between Democrat Kristen Dexter and Republican Terry
Mouton has been targeted by the Republicans who have poured money into
Mouton’s campaign to run attack ads and to use all the smear tactics they
can.  It won’t work!  Anyone who has been around Kristen Dexter knows her
tireless efforts to change the way things are done in Madison. She is a
critical link in winning back the Assembly for Democrats. But we need to
give her one more push to that victory. She needs our help during GOVT.
Please contact Kristen’s office at 855-1025 to volunteer.

MEMBERSHIP

It may seem a bit odd to be thinking about membership at this moment, but
it is critical to all we do. While this election year may be coming to an
end, Senator Pat Kreitlow reminds us November 5th is the beginning of the
2010 campaign. Members of the Democratic Party of Chippewa County have been
key volunteers for the Obama Campaign, the Kristen Dexter Campaign, and the
Holly Wood Webster Campaign. To begin the next campaigns we need everyone
to begin renewing their memberships and to begin talking to the hundreds of
others who came into our office for signs, buttons, bumper stickers,
shirts, and to volunteer for canvassing and phone calling, to join our
effort as a party to continue to promote progressive ideas and elect
candidates who will move this country forward.

CELEBRATE ELECTION NIGHT WITH US

Please join us for a joint election night party with the Obama Campaign and
Eau Claire County Democrats. Election day will be busy, tedious, critical,
and essential, but when we have done all we can, it will be time to relax
and enjoy the fruits of our labor. Please come and share your stories of
success.
